With the election of over 60 immigrant federal members of Parliament, three of which being appointed as federal ministers, the focus on creating a united multicultural Canada has never been stronger. As according to the Multiculturalism Act, Canada has held the view that multiculturalism is: “a fundamental characteristic of the Canadian heritage and identity and that it provides invaluable resource shaping of Canada’s future.” With the newly appointed MPs who truly understand the Canadian Immigrant experience, new approaches to politics and policies should be expected.
Darshan Kang, the recently elected Liberal MP of the Calgary-Skyview riding, immigrated to Canada in 1970. He moved to Calgary at the age of 19, when there were only 45 other people from India, and struggled to adapt to the Canadian lifestyle facing much discrimination. Kang however held out and brought his voice to Ottawa, now being the proud MP of a very diverse and accepting riding. For 2016, Kang aims to make one of his main priorities finding solutions to ensure prosperity for newcomers and continued success for immigrants who have been landed for some time. Kang stated, “I want new and established Canadians alike to build further and expand on Canadian traditions while respecting the very fabric of our multicultural society.”
Kang is not the only MP to have expressed views for the continuation of an accepting, multicultural Canada. Hedy Fry, a medical doctor and MP for the Vancouver Centre riding, since 1996 has held positions in the federal government closely linked to issues of diversity and immigration. Over her career she has traveled around Canada on numerous occasions to listen to the stories of immigrants, taking any of their praise or concerns with her to Parliament hill. For 2016 Fry aims to make sure “that all Canadians have equal rights and equal opportunities, that our public policies are inclusive, and there’s no room for any of us who discriminate against each other.”
As we move into the New Year, recently landed immigrants and immigrant hopefuls can look to expect much from their newly elected government. With enhanced focuses on multiculturalism and diversity Canada looks to become a world leader in creating an accepting and culturally aware community.
