For the first time ever in the history of Canada, the population of those aged 65+ has exceeded the population of those 14 and under. Though it comes as a surprise to no one, as the median age in Canada has been steadily increasing over the years, the current situation calls for action from the Canadian Government. With the aging population, young people are needed to sustain the Canadian workforce and keep the economy growing. However, if not enough can be found within Canada the Government must look elsewhere, outside its borders, for young new workers.
As Canadians begin to retire and advance in their careers, more and more entry level positions are becoming available to young Canadian workers. However, as the country is now at a shortage of young people compared to those reaching retirement age, many positions are being left open with no one being able to fill them. As the Canadian economy needs to continue to be sustained with young workers, getting immigrant workers to fill those positions seems to be the direction the government is headed in. With the number of Canadian immigrants last year hitting 239, 000, its lowest number since 2006-2007, many analysts have predicted changes to be made soon seeing potentially up to 350,000 immigrants being let into the country annually.
The current trend of growth in Canada presents exciting new opportunities for those looking to immigrate into the country. With more jobs available and more space for immigrants, the next few years may be the best times to apply for those looking to get into the country. Foreseeable changes made could be the lowering of standards for many skilled worker programs across multiple provinces, and increased cap space for express entry paths.
