Throughout the past years of Conservative rule, Stephen Harper has focused the immigration policies of Canada to center around economic prosperity. Aimed at bringing skilled workers into the country in order to stimulate economic growth and bring youth to the aging Canadian work force, Harper’s goals were accepted by many Conservatives across Canada. In development of recent weeks however, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal party have promised to change Canada’s focus, if elected, to “family reunification” a core they believe will also promote economic growth but at the same time is more important to Canadians.
According to Trudeau, “Making it easier for families to be together here in Canada makes more than just economic sense: When Canadians have added supports like family involvement in child care, it helps drives productive and economic growth.” The Liberals have promised to increase the cap placed by the Conservatives on the amount of parents and grandparents allowed to immigrate into the country. The Liberals claim these added family supports coming into the country will enable parents to go to work, leaving their children in the hands of people they trust.
The Liberals also plan on repealing the law set in place by the Conservative government that allowed for those owning dual citizenships who had committed certain crimes to have their Canadian Citizenship revoked. This move has found great support amongst the ethnic and civil-liberty groups that so vehemently opposed the law.
While the Liberals do plan on doing things differently from the Conservatives, many of their changes are hardly drastic. Though there will be a lot of cap changes and slight differences in policies, the Liberal government plans on keeping many of the fundamental instruments set up by the Conservatives.
