The government announced on May 19th that the US-Canada border is to remain closed until at least June 21st, 2020. This means that only travelers whose purposes for entering Canada are deemed “essential” will be granted admission.
But, what reasons are considered essential versus non-essential?
Essential Travel
Entry for a purpose that is not discretionary, including but not limited to:
- Economics services and supply chains
- Critical infrastructure support
- Health (immediate medical care), safety & security
- Indigenous communities (travel to support these communities and indigenous individuals)
- Transiting through Canada for essential purposes
- Cross-border employment
- Essential family purposes (tending to a sick relative; bringing supplies)
- Shopping for essential goods (medicine, etc.)
- Any other activities which are deemed essential by the Government of Canada or the border officer’s assessment
Non-Essential Travel
Entry for a purpose that is discretionary, including but not limited to:
- Tourism/sightseeing
- Recreation
- Entertainment
- Social visits to family and friends
- Religious functions
- Shopping for non-essential goods
