Newcomers to Canada are choosing to settle further east and west than the traditional immigrant hotspots of Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec, according to Census data. This is due in large part to the changes in labour market needs across Canada.
In the Atlantic Provinces, such as New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, immigration is rising rapidly because workers are needed to replace those that are retiring. In fact, New Brunswick is now attracting four times as many immigrants as it did two decades ago, while Prince Edward Island is seeing six times more newcomers than it did just six years ago.
At the same time, immigrants are needed in the Western and Prairie provinces (such as Alberta and Saskatchewan) because their economies are growing exponentially. This means that more and more positions are opening up in those areas and newcomers are very much in demand to help fill those positions.
